Core Tenets of Community-based Sheltering
MACC is Nashville’s community shelter. And we are leading the transformation to community-based sheltering.
These are the core tenets of building a better system for serving pets in need.
These are the core tenets of building a better system for serving pets in need.
Foster-centricHousing animals in loving homes
The majority of pets entering the shelter are placed in foster homes shortly after arrival, and are able to be adopted directly from their foster homes with MACC's support. |
Safety Net ProgramKeeping families together
MACC's Safety Net program provides services to community members and at-risk animals in order to remove the barriers that often exist in keeping pets with their owners. |
Return to HomeReuniting pets and families
MACC operates a comprehensive lost pet reunification service, in partnership with the community, to get most roaming pets home without them having to enter the shelter. |
Shelter ModelServing at-risk pets in the shelter
With more animals in foster homes, the shelter can focus on emergency medical care and short-term housing for pets with urgent needs. This helps limit public safety issues and keeps our community and its animals safer. |
Field ServicesProtecting and educating
Animal control and field services officers work directly with our community on enforcing laws, and provide education that helps address the root cause of animal welfare issues in Davidson County. |
PartnershipsWorking together to save lives
MACC works closely with social services agencies, veterinary practices, local rescue groups and other community partners, to help ensure families are treated holistically as a family unit. |
Community-based Sheltering In Action
In 2020, nearly 6,000 animals and families were served through community-based sheltering.

In early 2020, MACC responded to the pandemic by adopting an early community-based sheltering approach, which protected shelter staff, the animals in their care, and the community. The incredible outcomes realized from this approach continue to shape change at the shelter as we head into 2021.
